
Dubbing Reflection
This is a reflection of about 500 words on video dubbing.
What language skills do you think this dubbing task helped you improve the most? (e.g.,pronunciation, fluency, confidence in speaking, etc.)?
This dubbing project helped me improve my fluency in the target language the most. Through the process, I learned to express myself more naturally and spontaneously. One major insight I gained was the difference between spoken and written translation. I realized that spoken English translation needs to be more casual, direct, and conversational, unlike written translation which tends to be more formal. This shift in tone and register was the most valuable takeaway for me.
How did collaboration with group members support your oral development?
Collaboration played a big role in developing my speaking skills. What I appreciated most about our teamwork was that we didn’t rely entirely on AI tools to translate the script. Instead, we used Apple’s built-in translator as a reference, then discussed the lines together and made adjustments based on our understanding of the video. This meaningful discussion helped me become more aware of the nuances in spoken language and made the whole process enjoyable and engaging.
What changes did you observe in your speaking performance from Phase 1 to presentation?
From Phase 1 to the final presentation, I noticed clear progress in my speaking performance. At first, I only focused on reading the lines aloud. But later, I realized my tone didn’t match the depth and maturity of the character—a father figure. Being only 22, I struggled to sound more experienced, so I deliberately lowered my voice and tried to bring emotion into my lines. Even though the result wasn’t perfect, I enjoyed immersing myself in the role.
Which phase did you consider most challenging? Why?
The most challenging part was the post-production editing. I was responsible for combining and adjusting everyone’s recordings using video-editing software, and also introduced the tool to our classmates. As a perfectionist, I found it hard to balance everyone's speaking pace and make everything sound smooth and natural. However, my group members were very supportive and flexible, which made the process more manageable.
How did the use of ChatGPT support/hinder your learning process in this module? (e.g., subtitle translation, rehearsal, etc.)
As for ChatGPT, we barely used it in this project. Most of the work was done through group discussion and manual editing.
Would you consider using dubbing in your own future teaching? Why or why not? How?
TBH, I have already applied a similar dubbing activity in my private tutoring sessions. I let students watch a short video without subtitles, guess what’s being said, and complete a cloze exercise. After revealing the correct script, they practice mimicking the speaker’s tone and speed. This not only improves their fluency but also boosts their confidence in speaking. I believe dubbing can be a very effective tool in language teaching.
